What Is Onglyza?
Manufactured by Bristol-Myers-Squibb/AstraZeneca, Onglyza is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor that stimulates the body to produce insulin. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009, Onglyza is one of a class of these drugs that has earned billions on the market.
According to a preliminary review by the FDA, Onglyza may be associated with an increased rate of death due to heart failure. Although the drug supposedly did not result in an increased risk of heart failure in clinical trials, a “more detailed analysis” of Onglyza revealed “a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality.” The analysis, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, revealed a 27 percent increase in heart failure risk among diabetes patients taking the drug.
In February 2014, the FDA released a safety warning stating its concerns about Onglyza’s link to heart failure in diabetes patients. Although the FDA has not issued a recall, it has ordered Onglyza’s makers to include an additional warning on the label.
