Motor Vehicle Accidents Up in 2015

As a car-loving nation, the United States is home to approximately 253 million cars and trucks. Sometimes, traveling a single city block is inherently hazardous. Although most people associate motor vehicle accidents with car crashes, other types of traffic accidents include motorcycle crashes, semi-truck accidents, and pedestrian accidents.

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), 2015 may be the deadliest year for car accidents since 2007.

Car Accident Statistics

The NSC says 2015 has been a bad year for motorists. The agency’s statistics department released the following information for 2015:

  • There have been 2.3 million car accidents involving serious injuries
  • 19,000 individuals were killed in car accidents between January and June
  • Costs associated with car accidents increased by 24 percent, which translates to $152 billion

Experts point to a few factors as possible causes for the increase in traffic accidents and fatalities. Possible reasons for the higher figures include a better economy and lower gas prices.

Researchers also suggest an increase in the use of smartphones behind the wheel is to blame. According to a 2015 AT&T survey, 70 percent of individual surveyed admitted to using their smartphone while driving. Another 61 percent admit to using social media behind the wheel.
